Moshe Spitzer

Dr. Morris (Moshe) Spitzer, a renowned Sanskrit and ancient Indian scholar, was director of Schocken Verlag between 1934 and 1938. Between 1932 and 1934 he was research assistant of Martin Buber.

In 1939 Spitzer relocated in Jerusalem, where he started the elite Tarshish publishing house. Tarshish specialized in publishing classical works in the most exquisite bindings, artwork, and typography.

Spitzer was a passionate and brilliant bibliophile who was avidly involved in every aspect of book making and publishing. He is widely considered one of the most important contributors to the revival of Jewish publishing in modern times.
